Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

Another model I use to help couples is, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy or EFT, which is an approach to couples therapy formulated by Drs. Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg. Research studies find that 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery and 90% show significant improvement in their relationship. It is currently one of the best delineated and most empirically validated couples therapy of the past 25 years. EFT can also be used with individual clients and families. I have been trained in EFT by Dr. Susan Johnson and George Faller in an externship,  and then a Core Skills advanced course with George Faller.

EFT is being used with many different kinds of clients in many different settings, including private practice, university training programs, and hospital clinics with many different cultural groups around the world. The goals of EFT include expanding and re-organizing key emotional responses- creating a shift in partner's communication patterns, initiating new cycles of interaction, and fostering the creation of a secure bond between partners. Sue Johnson wrote the book, Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love. Learn more about EFT at
